Is It Time for a Website Refresh?

Your organization’s website is its introduction to the world. But while your social media channels and print materials get regularly updated, it’s easy to overlook keeping your website fresh, engaging, and useful. If you’re wondering if it’s time for a website refresh for your nonprofit organization, here are some key questions to ask:

Is your website functional?

Seems like an easy requirement! Yet when functionality starts to break down on the backend, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the necessary fixes. That can hinder the user experience, making the website more difficult for your target visitors to navigate or find what they’re looking for.

On the other end of the spectrum, if your organization has a wishlist of functionalities that your current website can’t handle, it’s time to move on. Your website needs to work for you — and that means working for your users too.

Is your website accessible?

Now, more than ever, people have a multitude of ways of navigating the web; yet inaccessible websites deny people with disabilities equal access to information. Today’s websites need to be ADA-compliant — especially if you accept any state or federal funding. Inclusion means building for everyone — and that goes a long way with individuals with disabilities.

Think color contrast, captions, alt text, keyboard navigation, screen-reader friendliness, etc. If your website isn’t optimized for accessibility, it’s definitely time for a website refresh.

Is your website mobile-responsive?

More than 60% of traffic comes from mobile devices these days — which means users have high expectations for consistent and seamless experiences across devices. If your site works on desktop but not on mobile or tablet, you’re making them work harder to get the same information. Time to streamline the user experience by optimizing your website to work across various screen sizes!

Has your organization undergone any rebranding since your last update?

A crucial element of rebranding is consistency. Consistency breeds familiarity, credibility, and trust. Prospective constituents should be able to immediately identify anything associated with your organization as being yours. So when you’re rolling out your rebranding, don’t forget your website! And if you worked with a graphic designer, don’t be afraid to ask for graphic elements to weave into your updated website design. It’s a feature we love!

Are you able to easily update your website?

Updating your website should be part of your regular marketing maintenance, but if it’s a herculean task, it’s probably at the bottom of your to-do list. A website that is user-friendly on the backend makes it easier for you to make relevant updates to keep things fresh — such as updating your staff roster, board directory, upcoming programs, and blog. (Yes, blogs are still relevant.)

Is your web copy accessible?

Websites serve a multitude of purposes: introducing your organization to potential clients, sharing programs and services, promoting upcoming events, and telling your story. But if your web copy is steeped in jargon, you’re making it harder for your reader to feel connected to your organization. Your  content needs to tell your visitor what you do and how you do it in a way that is clear, direct, and indicative of your brand’s tone and personality. If the copy isn’t hitting the right notes, it might be time for a refresh.
