Baltimore Healthy Start recognizes that a significant factor in reducing infant mortality is by addressing the well-being of women and their families. They also recognize that for Black women, there are significant social, political, and economic constraints that create barriers to quality maternal care. Their boots-on-the-ground activism has been instrumental in reducing the infant mortality rate and advancing perinatal health in Baltimore City. And as a leader in the field, they wanted to recognize others doing the work as well.

Cue the Black Maternal Health Awards. In partnership with The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Baltimore Healthy Start launched this new annual accolade to recognize fellow individuals and organizations who are addressing black maternal health issues in Baltimore. However, for the 2024 awards luncheon, there was one notable honoree: Baltimore Healthy Start Executive Director, Lashelle Stewart.

Unbeknownst to Lashelle, her staff and the executive director of The Reginald F. Lewis Museum came together to recognize her incredible contributions to the field. We were super excited to be in on the surprise and more than happy to make it happen. But here’s where it got tricky.

Normally, Lashelle would sign off on all event collateral: the Powerpoint presentation for the awards luncheon, the printed program, donation cards for guests to make gifts to the organization, and additional materials. And she did — except she didn’t. When it came to the awards presentation and the program, we made two versions: one with Lashelle’s award acknowledged, and one without. Double the work, double the fun!

We’re honored to be able to support this incredible mission that is making a significant difference for women and families throughout Baltimore. And we’re even more delighted that we got to be in on the surprise. Being Baltimore Healthy Start’s partner for event collateral and their design needs has been so rewarding, in so many ways.

We’re looking forward to seeing what additional impact the organization continues to have in the future.
